The only thing necessary for evil to triumph is for good people to do nothing.” ~ Sir Edmund Burke

Our Mission

To stop helicopter roundups by enacting the Wild Horse and Burro Protection Act HR 3656 NOW

In 1971, when the wild free roaming horses and burros act was signed, the president made this statement:

“Wild horses and Burros merit mans protection historically — for they are the living link with the days of the conquistadors, through the heroic times of the Western Indians and the pioneers, to our own day when the wilderness seems all to scarce. More than that they merit protection as a matter of ecological right — as anyone knows who has ever stood awed at the indomitable spirit and sheer energy of a Mustang running free.”

Facts About Wild Horses And The BLM Wild Horse And Burro plan.

  • Since the year 1900 the BLM, formerly the Federal Grazing Service, has eliminated 94% of wild horses going from over 2,000,000 to now about 125,000 with 60,000 held in BLM pens" Wild Horse ARE an endangered species
  • The way they were eliminated was to allow shooting, poisoning and running them to death and paying a bounty at one time to appease capitalism which valued cattle, mining, oil and gas over wild horse lives.
  • In 2013 The National Academy of Sciences did at study of the Wild Horse and Burro management plan (cost to taxpayer over $1,000,000) in which it criticized the plan as poorly managed and inept.  (See the results of study at americanwildhorsecampaign.org/media/nas-key-findings).
  • The terrorizing of helicopter roundups yearly kills hundreds injures hundreds including new foals (babies under 12 months old) at a cost of $150,000,000 yearly($53,000,000 spend on helicopter contracts) and goes up about 20% per year-Over a Billion Dollars of taxpayer money has been wasted on trying to eliminate the majority of wild horse to satisfy cattle ranchers, mining, oil and gas capitalistic projects.
  • The wild horse and burro program costs are 2021=$112,000,000   2022=$138,000,000   2023= $158,000,000
  • Land is leased to various entities for only $2 per acre and ranchers are only charged $1.35 per head per month to graze on BLM controlled land.
  • The BLM uses inaccurate, deceptive and often baseless claims to continue to roundups wild horses every year

The Wild and Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act of 1971 (WFRHBA), is an Act of Congress (Pub. L.Tooltip Public Law (United States) 92–195), signed into law by President Richard M. Nixon on December 18, 1971. The act covered the management, protection and study of "unbranded and unclaimed horses and burros on public lands in the United States."

WILD HORSE BILL OF RIGHTS

Wild horses deserve the rights and legal protections that were guaranteed to them in Public Law 92-195 act of congress: 1971 Wild and Free Roaming horses and Burros Act (see sidebar). They are supported by the majority of Americans and these rights must be adhered to and enforced.

Wild Horse Warrior are advocates for these rights and laws that embody the principles of the following:

  • The rights of wild horses to have their status of being "free and wild roaming" remain as they are feeling beings who live in family units and are negatively impacted by Federal roundups with no scientific or ethical justification.
  • The right of wild horses under human care to have their individual needs fulfilled to support their physical, mental, and emotional well-being.
  • The right of wild horses in the wild to live in an environment that allows them to engage in lives that are natural, peaceful, and unrestricted by man.
  • The right of wild horses to be protected by the laws that prohibit cruelty, terrorism, and exploitation.
  • The right of wild horses to have their interests represented in court and to be safeguarded by the laws of 1971 which calls for the their "humane treatment" without restrictions.
  • The right of wild horses subject to criminal acts of terror, abuse or any criminal action to be legally recognized and treated as victims of a crime.
  • The right of wild horses to not be subjected to the cruel roundups using helicopters, and other motorized vehicles, which create panic resulting in many horses being injured or killed when falling.

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has released its 2024 wild horse and burro population estimates, which reveals a troubling reality: There may be more wild horses and burros stockpiled in holding facilities than living in the wild.

While Congress has repeatedly directed BLM to prioritize in-the-wild conservation by prioritizing fertility control, assigning up to $22M, the BLM spent fewer resources on fertility control in 2023 than 2022—a mere 1% of its total budget. In contrast, the BLM spent $109 million on stockpiling 64,000 horses and burros into federal holding facilities at taxpayers' expense.

AWHC's Executive Director, Suzanne Roy, says: “Continuing costly, large-scale helicopter roundups is a flawed, excessive, and inhumane policy that places an unmanageable burden on an inadequate holding and adoptions system and on U.S. taxpayers. The program also comes at a high cost to these wild, free-roaming animals who are captured, traumatized, robbed of their freedom, and will spend the rest of their lives in captivity, or worse, will end up at slaughter plants in Canada and Mexico.”
